Funeral Options

All denominations and unaffiliated families are welcome. We offer traditional Jewish services, cremation, green burial, burial in Israel, and more.

Green Burials

Every family is different, and not everyone wants the same type of funeral. This type of burial allows the body to be naturally recycled, includes no embalming, the use of a plain, all-wood casket, and no burial vault (if permitted by the cemetery).

Plan ahead to protect your family. Our Licensed Funeral Directors offer the guidance you need to make informed choices for yourself and your loved ones.

We offer a certified bereavement counselor and therapy dog on staff to support your unique grief journey. We’re here to help you find resources that fit your needs.

Founded in 1919 by Ralph Schugar in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, Ralph Schugar Chapel relocated to Shadyside in 1937, where it remains in a dignified Tudor-style building. Operated since the 1970s by four generations of the Ryave family, it upholds high standards of care and commitment to the Western Pennsylvania Jewish community.

Serving all denominations, including Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist, and unaffiliated families, the chapel offers a range of traditional and non-traditional services in English and Russian. Wheelchair accessible and equipped for the hearing impaired, Ralph Schugar Chapel ensures compassionate and inclusive service across all price ranges.
